It’s important to schedule regular dental checkups for yourself to keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean. It is highly recommended that professional teeth cleaning should be done at least once every six months in Phoenix.
What to expect at your visit
Every dental checkup has a couple different phases: the examination and the cleaning. During the examination portion, the dental professional will inspect your teeth for cavities, plaque and tartar. Plaque is the clear, sticky layer of bacteria that gets on your teeth and can harden over time to become tartar. Failure to keep up with proper brushing and flossing can result in tartar developing on or between your teeth. The longer plaque and tartar build up and remain on your teeth, the more likely it is that you’ll experience oral diseases.
The hygienist will also check your gums with a special tool that measures the depth of spaces between the gums and teeth. The healthier the gums, the shallower the spaces will be. People with gum disease are more likely to have deeper spaces.
Finally, the examination will include checks of the tongue, throat, face and neck to look for potential signs of swelling or redness, or any other signs that may indicate oral disease or cancer.
Once the examination phase of the appointment has concluded, the cleaning can begin. While you can remove plaque from your teeth at home by brushing and flossing, you cannot effectively remove tartar at home. The dental professional will perform a task called scaling at your appointment to remove tartar buildup. Once the teeth have been scaled, they will be polished with a gritty sort of toothpaste to help remove stains on your teeth. You will often have several options available to you for flavors of this toothpaste, so choose wisely!
The final step of cleaning is flossing. Your dental professional will use floss to make sure the spaces between your teeth are clean and free of plaque.
Do your part
You can make matters much easier on your dental professionals by taking good care of your teeth and gums between dental visits. You will not have nearly as much to dread from your appointments if you have kept up with your brushing and flossing. This will help you prevent tartar and plaque buildup. Flossing especially keeps your gums strong and prevents issues with bleeding that you might otherwise experience if you do not keep up with flossing in between appointments.
Be sure to always brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss once a day. Toothpastes you use should contain fluoride. You can also use a mouthwash to freshen your breath while also keeping plaque bacteria under control.
