What to Expect During Zoom! Teeth Whitening

July 16, 2020 Published by Leave your thoughts

We all want a healthy smile, including whiter teeth. For many people, Zoom! teeth whitening in Phoenix, AZ is the fastest and easiest way to achieve a great smile. If you’ve never had a professional tooth whitening procedure performed before, you might be wondering what to expect.

Zoom! whitening is a fast and relatively painless process that delivers great results. In fact, you can whiten your teeth up to eight shades in just one session. Read on to learn what your sessions will be like, and how to perform appropriate aftercare.

Pre-whitening consultation

Before you can get your teeth whitened, your dentist needs to determine whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure. Tooth sensitivity and gum disease, like periodontitis, can make the process extremely painful for some patients. However, if you have normal teeth with no need for work ahead of time, we’ll likely be able to schedule you for a whitening appointment as soon as possible.

Zoom! whitening procedure

The procedure takes about 45 minutes to complete, and is broken up into three 15-minute sessions. First, we’ll cover your lips and gums so that the whitening gel won’t come into contact with them. Then we’ll apply the whitening gel to your teeth. It’s made with hydrogen peroxide, which can penetrate your tooth enamel and lift stains once it’s activated by our blue LED lamp.

After the first and second sessions, more whitening gel is applied to your teeth, then the LED lamp is turned back on for another 15 minutes. During this time, you’re encouraged to sit back and relax, whether that means listening to music or a podcast or taking some time to meditate—it should be relatively painless.

However, some patients do feel brief flashes of pain as the nerves in their teeth react to the whitening gel and LED light. This is perfectly normal, but if the pain becomes too intense, you should alert us immediately. We can stop the procedure and either discontinue it entirely or try another time. The pain may continue after you leave the office, so you may need some painkillers to make the aftercare process easier.

After the third session, fluoride gel is applied to your teeth to help prevent further pain—and then you’re ready to go, with a smile that should be several shades whiter than when you walked in.

Post-appointment aftercare

After the whitening process, it’s important that you stay away from foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking cigarettes are all tough on your teeth, so avoid them as much as possible. After all, it’s entirely possible that you can re-stain your teeth—whitening isn’t permanent.

You’ll also get custom teeth-whitening trays so you can keep up your white smile at home. If you experience pain that can’t be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, or you experience other side effects, be sure to give us a call right away.
